Food was a crutch I used for emotional comfort starting very early in my childhood, which resulted in being overweight at just 8 years old. By the time I hit my 20s, I was over 300 pounds. The majority of my life has been spent battling the anxiety and limitations morbid obesity insidiously brings.
I hit the breaking point on vacation at Universal Studios when I boarded a roller coaster with my boyfriend and the lap bar wouldn’t close over my body. The ride attendant fiercely tried smashing it down so it would latch, but I was just too big. I had to unboard the ride in front of dozens of people. It was humiliating. That’s when I realized my quality of life wasn’t what I deserved.
I was inspired to start Keto when I saw a friend post her 100-pound Keto transformation on social media. She wasn’t trying to sell me anything or push any products, and I thought to myself “if she can do it, I can do it.” To get started, I soaked up “Keto science” like a sponge. I joined Facebook groups, scoured Pinterest, read blogs and medical papers — everything I could get my hands on to learn about this lifestyle. Then I jumped right in! I went to the store and got the basics; meat, cheese, veggies, butter. When I got home I told my boyfriend “so, I’m Keto now” and haven’t looked back.
Something I wish I’d known in the beginning is that “getting your fats in” isn’t a requirement if you’re doing Keto for weight loss. I used to force myself to eat spoonfuls of butter or cream cheese at night if I didn’t meet my fat macro! Completely unnecessary and counter-productive.
Since I’m now on my third year of Keto, I am fat adapted. So I don’t typically feel hungry until late afternoon. I usually start my day by drinking a few large coffees throughout the morning and then indulging in a nice, large early dinner (steak with loaded broccoli is my jam!) with a little Keto treat for dessert.
What motivates me is waking up every morning and feeling HEALTHY, which is something I didn’t feel for most of my life. My feet used to ache the second they hit the floor, my heart would beat rapidly all day long, I had hypertension, my heavy chest made my breathing very labored, and those things have ALL disappeared since Keto came into my life.
My advice to someone just starting is to be kind to yourself. None of us approach Keto exactly the same way and none of us execute it perfectly. Create a balance that is individual to YOUR life — methods and allowances that make this way of eating sustainable. Because sustainability and consistency are how you achieve long term success.
