Success Story: Joe and Rachel's (aka 2KrazyKetos)
Joe and Rachel, known as 2KrazyKetos, are major influences in the Ketosphere. They add fun, inspiration, and motivation to their followers’ lives, and we HIGHLY recommend becoming one of their followers on YouTube and their other social channels listed below. Keto has transformed their lives — they both experienced major weight loss and resolved numerous health issues through their lifestyle. Below, Joe shares their stories, their current Keto routine, and their tips for new Keto’ers!
We have both struggled with our weight our entire lives. All through school, I was the chubby kid who never really fit in. I can remember as far back as in 6th grade having to wear husky sized pants. As I continued into adulthood, I would constantly yo-yo diet. I would get to a point where I was disgusted with my weight, so I would try a diet or exercise program, lose a few pounds, and then get fed up with all the restrictions, deciding I was “skinny enough.” Of course, my “skinny enough” was still morbidly obese. I finally settled into a state of denial, ignoring the fact that I could no longer fit into 2XL shirts. Oversized t-shirts and basketball shorts became my uniform because they were so forgiving around the waist. Though I normally avoided the scale, the highest number I ever saw was about 295 pounds.
Rachel has had an unhealthy relationship with food most of her life. Instead of using food as a fuel source, she’s used it as a source of emotional support, reward, and punishment. After a 100-pound weight loss through severe calorie restriction that felt more like a losing yo-yo tournament than a major accomplishment, Rachel began to think maybe she just wasn’t meant to be skinny. Prior to starting Keto, Rachel was eating about 500-800 calories a day of plain oatmeal and greek yogurt and was gaining weight.
After being challenged to a weight loss competition, I discovered the Keto lifestyle after my CrossFit gym closed. I figured, “What do I have to lose? I’ve tried every other diet. Maybe this one will actually work.” I dove right in without doing much research about Keto Flu, proper macros, or healthy fats. All I did was cut the carbs and started eating high-fat foods. After about 6 months, I lost over 80 pounds, going from almost 285 pounds to 210. Rachel joined me the following February after seeing my success — success that addressed both my weight and other health issues. Over the period of about 6 weeks, she went from a size 8 to a size 2. As we progressed through our journey, we slowly changed the types of food we ate and began switching to pasture-raised eggs and non-inflammatory oils like avocado and coconut oil. It took us a while to get into intermittent fasting, and I wish we would have started it sooner.
Today we eat pretty simply. We usually start our day with coffee — sometimes black, and other times with some Perfect Keto MCT powder and KITU coffee creamer. We practice intermittent fasting because it helps avoid grazing throughout the day. Rachel usually eats her first meal at 2pm, and she tries to wrap up her last meal before 8pm. I have a different schedule than her, so my meal times are a bit different. However, we both like to have an eating window of about six to eight hours. Our first meal is usually eggs, ground beef, or a Keto Chow made with butter. For dinner, it’s ground beef, brisket, or wings. Occasionally we’ll make some fancier meals like our cheeseburger casserole, Keto chili, or another Keto recipe. But with such busy lives, we usually keep it very simple.
We love KetoKrate because it allows us to sample some of the different Keto-friendly snacks on the market. Unfortunately, Keto snacks can be pricey. Of course, that’s because they’re made with such high-quality ingredients. KetoKrate enables us to taste test what’s available before committing our wallet to a full-sized quantity and price tag. It also gives us an opportunity to receive discounts on products we’d like to enjoy again. We’ve found some great snack options that have become part of our regular diet. Some of our favorites are Keto Farms, Smart Cakes, and High Key snacks.
Certainly, we were motivated by our own weight loss success when we started the Keto diet. We wanted to see those numbers go down on the scale. But the longer we were on Keto, the better we felt throughout our bodies. We noticed pain and inflammation we had tried to manage for years was suddenly gone. After that, we suggested the Keto diet to Rachel’s mom, who had Type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years. Less than a year later, her mom’s health completely reversed. She was able to get off all diabetes medication and change her identity in her medical file. Since then, our motivation has been all about helping others enjoy the same success our family has experienced. We understand health improvement translates to a longer life span and more opportunities to spend time with your family.
We truly believe that Keto is an amazing lifestyle and that it can benefit anyone — not just people who want to lose weight. Because of that, in January of 2019, we decided to really invest our time and energy into our YouTube channel and reach as many people as possible. We upload at least 5 new videos every week, sharing recipes, product reviews, full day of eating vlogs, and conversations about various Keto topics. Every Monday, we sit down on our couch and talk about what’s going on in our lives. Recently, we’ve started incorporating live videos on Thursdays at 8pm EST. Our goal is to grow our YouTube channel, travel the country visiting various Keto events, and encourage as many people as we can along their own Keto journeys.
People always ask us how to best way to start Keto, and our answer is usually pretty simple. We always suggest not to worry about calories or macros for the first couple weeks. Start by cutting out the carbs, eating fat and protein until you’re full, and taking loads of electrolytes to avoid the Keto flu. Once your body is used to using fat for fuel, start figuring out your macros and slowly tapering your calories. There will be days when you get discouraged. So, to keep you motivated, we encourage folks to find a support group like our Facebook group 2krazyketosfamily.
