I was overweight and obese most of my teenage years and adult life. I was successful at losing weight many times, but it wasn’t easy. I counted calories more times than I care to think about, ate boring and bland food, and even went through a period of time when I would go weeks only drinking protein shakes. Such unhealthy, self-loathing habits. A friend at work had a blood pressure machine and we would periodically check our own. I noticed my blood pressure was getting higher and higher and I refused to go on medicine. I knew if I lost weight, I wouldn’t need medication. And I was right!
I initially started keto after finding Low Carb Traveler Lynn Terry (@lowcarbtraveler). She had a 90 day low carb Facebook group. I thought, I’ve tried so many other things. Why not give this a shot? 90 days turned into over 3 years! To get started, I took ownership of my journey. I always say, “If you want to be successful, follow successful people.” This initially meant watching what the successful people in Lynn’s facebook group did. From there, I began following hashtags and keto accounts on Instagram, and tracking my food using the Lose It app.
I owe a lot of my success to keeping it simple! I learned this at the beginning from Lynn. I use recipes as more of a treat rather than a staple in my kitchen. Dinner is easy in my house: a meat and vegetable, or a meat and eggs – lately I can’t get enough eggs!
Now that I’m in maintenance, I still track my calories and carbs closely during the week. On the weekend I’m a bit more relaxed on tracking, but always keto! I enjoy indulging a bit on the weekend, which may mean trying a recipe, making a baked good or dessert, or a few keto snacks. Speaking of keto snacks, I love the variety KetoKrate provides – everything from bars to meat sticks. I also enjoy being able to try a single new product rather than having to spend a large amount on a product that I may not like. Some of my favorite products are Heka Good Foods bars, Magic Spoon cereal, and Raw Rev bars. The coupon codes KetoKrate provides are always a nice perk as well!
Most days I intermittently fast, closing my window at about 6pm and eating at about 10am the next day. I’m a creature of habit and have the same work lunch all week long: 2 servings of pork rinds and a can of chicken salad. (My prep for chicken salad is simple – add hot sauce, a serving of sour cream and a few banana peppers!)
People often ask if they have to exercise on keto. My answer is no matter what lifestyle you live, we should all exercise. Once I decided to change my way of eating, I started exercising. This started out just going outside for a walk, or walking in place at work while my co-workers smoked. I then transitioned to using the Couch to 5K app, which helped me become a runner. I enjoy running in place inside my house while catching up on YouTube keto influencers!
For those just starting out – do your research, watch what other people are doing, read labels, and utilize Google. Nothing tastes as good as feeling healthy. Trust your journey, love yourself, give yourself grace, and remember why you started!
