Hi guys! For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Mayra. I’ve lost 135lbs through diet and exercise. I’ve lived a Keto lifestyle for a little over 5 years now and have maintained my weight loss through Keto. I’ve had my ups and downs throughout my journey, but they’ve led me to where I am today. A weight loss journey is not easy but I can reassure you that it’s 💯 worth it! 

A little background on how I started my journey . . . as a child, I was overweight but really started gaining major weight as a teenager. Growing up, I ate all the junk food advertised on TV. My parents didn’t know any better and just wanted to make me happy. I used to go grocery shopping with my mom and would add all the junk food I wanted. Over the years, the weight kept adding up. Once I reached about 250 lbs, I started trying to diet on my own but would always fail. I started eating foods advertised as “healthy,” but that obviously didn’t work — they weren’t healthy at all and only caused me to gain more weight. I reached 315lbs at the age of 17! I knew I had to do something about my weight but didn’t know where to start.

The last straw came with my 17th birthday, and I remember that birthday like it was yesterday. My parents rented me a limo so my girlfriends and I could have the night of our lives in Hollywood. The next day, we developed our photos (digital wasn’t a thing back then!) and to my surprise, I didn’t recognize the “me” in the photos. I was so huge! I felt so embarrassed at how big I looked, especially compared to my friends who were teeny tiny. I wanted to rip all the photos up and burn them. At that very moment, I decided to make the change for good. Not tomorrow, not next Monday, but right then and there. From that very day, I lost 100lbs one year later. 

My weightloss journey has been the hardest but most rewarding experience of my life (besides my daughter, Nati 😁). I cut out sugar, rice, bread, pasta, and all processed foods; I ate meats and veggies; and I also worked out like crazy. I chose Keto because I’m able to eat delicious food and have great energy. My appetite is controlled most of the time, and my cravings for junk food are at a minimum when I’m in Ketosis. No other diet gives you these benefits. I was so laser focused and didn’t let any life events or holidays get in my way. My results came from hard work, pushing myself, and consistency.

Reflecting on the start of my Keto journey, I wish I would have known that I didn’t need to overthink it. So for those starting out, or continuing on their journey, don’t try to be perfect. This isn’t a race, and it’s going to take trial and error to find your way. Be patient, stay consistent, and results will follow.

My other tips to get started? I know it can be a bit overwhelming when trying to make the switch. I do recommend just going Keto cold turkey. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s easier and you’ll see results more quickly. Clear out your pantry of junk food, stock up on Keto basics, look up some yummy recipes, check out a Keto book or two, and take before photos and measurements. Commit to 30 days with no cheats no matter what and give it all you’ve got! This means tracking your 20 net carbs, sticking to the basics (meats, veggies, and healthy fats), and eating real food. Plus, don’t compare yourself to others, and don’t over complicate things!

Today, my routine is a little different than most people in the Keto community. I intermittent fast at least 18 hours daily. I try to stick to OMAD (One Meal A Day) most days because it makes my life easier and I don’t have to worry about calculating macros. I fast — drinking only coffee and sparkling water — until my meal. Then, I eat until I’m completely satisfied and then I start my fast again. It’s not for everyone but it works for me. Other days, I fast 18 hours and eat two meals, but it really depends on my day. You have to make Keto work for you — not the other way around.

As for inspiration, my daughter keeps me 100% motivated because I want to set and lead with a good example. This community also keeps me super motivated! It’s hard not to stay motivated when you see so many success stories on IG. My future goals with Keto are to teach people that this is a sustainable way of eating. Keto is not just about weight loss — it’s about better health.
