By the time I was 9 years old, I was overweight. I remember sneaking and eating peanut butter in the middle of the night, and I continued developing this unhealthy relationship with food all through my school years.
I hit a turning point in February of 2011. My first marriage had ended and I was a 411-pound single mom with no job, no money, and no hope. But one night, I was at a friend’s wedding and happened to sit next to someone who was very passionate about fitness and health. He told me something that still sticks with me today: "If you want to change, stop blaming others."
That was really hard to hear, but a light bulb went off for me in that moment. I had been blaming others for years. It was time to take responsibility and commit to change.
I decided to start eating keto because I had done it in the past and knew how to make all of the foods. I knew keto worked for me, and it helped resolve my migraine headaches. In 2018 I had bariatric surgery and started following a sugar-free, low-carb way of eating. I’ve been sticking to it ever since and haven’t looked back! I wish I’d known when I started that keto is a sustainable diet. I often hear people say that you can’t do keto long-term and I let it get to my head.
I keep keto simple with foods that I love! Breakfast is usually eggs, which are cheap and easy to make. I keep low-carb tortillas around for turkey wraps at lunch, and my husband makes the best pan-seared ribeye steaks for dinner. We buy them on sale and freeze them to save for a fabulous date night in!
For desserts, I use Swerve sweetener to make sugar-free cookies and ice cream. I love to get creative! Late night shows and snacking is my jam, so KetoKrate keeps me on track while still indulging. Some of my favorite snacks are Magic Spoon cereal, Milkadamia macadamia nut milk, and Moon Cheese!
My biggest motivation is my children! I want to lead by example and teach them how to live a healthy lifestyle. And I want to be able to play with them! I spent too many years sitting on the couch, unable to even get up to walk.
To someone who is just starting out, give yourself time and grace. Find what works for you and stick with it. No cheats! And it’s important to ask for support. We aren't meant to do this alone. It can feel intimidating at first, but you will be surprised at the willingness of others to help you on your journey.
Throughout this journey, I’ve realized the biggest part of losing weight isn't physical. There are emotional, mental, and even spiritual changes that you go through, too. Taking responsibility is surprisingly freeing!
