I was athletic in school, but I’ve always been a little overweight. After high school, I joined a volunteer firehouse and started working full time driving a tow truck for the state of Maryland on the midnight shift. Between both jobs, I was eating multiple bad meals a day. I would eat with the guys at work at night and the guys at the firehouse in the morning. Plus snacks and junk food throughout the night. It got so bad that at one point I remember eating dinner at the firehouse and then a second dinner at work, snacks that night while I worked, breakfast on the way home, and then another breakfast with the guys at the firehouse. Not only was I gaining weight, but my overeating led to high blood pressure and sleep apnea.
At 320lbs, I was hit with a bombshell when I walked into the firehouse and was told I was too fat to be a firefighter. This caused me to feel even more depressed, which led me to eat more and more. I had basically given up. I was done and I didn’t care anymore.
In 2017 I went for my yearly CDL physical and the nurse told me I weighed in at 425lbs like it was nothing. When she saw my reaction, she said “we see lots of you state guys this big.” Like that was supposed to comfort me.
When I got back to my car, I looked at myself in the rear view mirror. Up until that point, I didn’t care that my shirt size was getting bigger or that my waist was growing. But that day changed my life. That nurse changed my life. I didn’t want to be like the other state employees. I didn’t want to be a statistic.
So I started researching diets. One of my friends had recently lost weight on Keto, so I researched it online. On my birthday I started my journey. I stopped eating bread, drinking sodas, and started watching my carb intake. In my first year I lost just under 100 pounds. I was amazed! I kept it up and started adding intermittent fasting into my routine. By my second year of Keto I had lost another 80 pounds. This put me at my current weight of 240 pounds and at an XL shirt and 38” waist.
My family helps me stay motivated. When I looked at myself that day in the mirror, I remember being miserable, tired, and fed up. And I also realized how much my weight was affecting my family. I couldn’t play with my daughter because I was always tired. It affected my relationship with my wife. She told me after the fact that she always feared I was going to die young.
Now I have more energy than ever and a strong relationship with my wife! I still work nights, so my day officially starts at 2pm when I wake up. I eat my breakfast and go about my day. Around 5-7pm I eat dinner, with a snack or two thrown in during the day. I fast from 7pm until the next afternoon when I wake up. My current goals are to get under 200 pounds and continue a long healthy life with my family!
My advice to someone who is starting their Keto journey is don’t over complicate the diet. Start small and continue to research throughout your journey. And always remember, this isn’t a diet it’s a lifestyle change. Finally, don’t let the world bring you down. Don’t get frustrated if other diets didn’t work. Give Keto a chance. You have nothing to lose if you try it. But everything to gain!
KetoKrate helps me by helping me discover new products that I haven’t tried. It adds more great foods to my Keto lifestyle. My favorites are Chocoperfection, ChocZero white chocolate peanut butter cups, and Piizootz peanuts. I wish I’d known back before I started Keto how easy it was to be healthy and still eat foods that weren’t tasteless or unappealing!
